The much-anticipated leak from Amazon Italy proved true as Mortal Kombat 1 Kombat Pack 1 was officially revealed at the event. This first DLC pack will bring six new playable characters and five Kameo Fighters to the game.

One of the most awaited comebacks is that of Li Mei, voiced by the talented Kelly Hu. Li Mei, who originally made her debut in 2002’s Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance, returns as a constable in Outworld’s police force. Previously a member of the Umgadi, a group of warrior priestesses sworn to protect the Outworld royal family, Li Mei now wields a range of formidable magical abilities.

Joining Li Mei on the battlefield is none other than the Umgadi leader, Tanya, who fans will remember from her appearance in Mortal Kombat 11. Alongside Tanya, Baraka makes his triumphant return from MK11, now leading the Outworlders affected by the Tarkat plague.

Old new characters

Baraka has long been a recognizable figure in the Mortal Kombat series, known for his fearsome appearance with sharp teeth and blades extending from his arms. On the other hand, Tanya and Li-Mei are relatively more obscure characters, originating from the 3D era of the series.

Tanya first made her debut in Mortal Kombat 4, appearing on the Nintendo 64 and PlayStation platforms. She continued to be present in various PlayStation 2-era games and also had an appearance in the story mode of Mortal Kombat X. In Mortal Kombat 1, Tanya showcases a refreshed look, wielding a three-section staff, which adds a unique dimension to her fighting style.

Li Mei, on the other hand, first appeared in the PS2-era Mortal Kombat games and, much like Tanya, was primarily featured in story mode cameos until now. She uses hand-to-hand combat techniques combined with sorcery-style magical abilities to take on her opponents.

NetherRealm Studios has disclosed that Darrius, another staple character from the PS2-era Mortal Kombat games, will make a comeback as a Kameo Fighter. Kameo Fighters are a separate roster of characters who can be selected to assist your primary fighter with various techniques.

Optional add-on content

In addition to the returning characters, the studio has unveiled the lineup for the optional Kombat Pack add-on content, introducing more exciting characters:

  • Peacemaker from DC Comics’ The Suicide Squad film and Peacemaker TV series.
  • Omni-Man from Robert Kirkman’s Invincible comic book and animated series.
  • Homelander from Amazon’s series adaptation of The Boys

Homelander will become available in spring 2024. This suggests that the first part of Kombat Pack 1 will be released before the end of the current year, though an exact date is yet to be confirmed.

Kombat Pack 1 also features an exciting inclusion for fans of action movie legend Jean-Claude Van Damme. The Johnny Cage skin, showcasing the likeness and voice of The Muscles from Brussels himself, will be part of the DLC. Moreover, players can look forward to Ferra, Khameleon, Mavado, and Tremor as Kameo Fighters.

The Kombat Pack marks the return of Quan Chi, Ermac, and Takeda Takahashi. While the voice actors for these guest characters have not been officially confirmed, fans are hopeful to hear John Cena, Antony Starr, and J.K. Simmons reprise their roles.

These returning characters were initially leaked through an errant listing on Amazon Italy.

Mortal Kombat 1 is scheduled for release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Windows PC, and Nintendo Switch on 19th September 2023, with a beta version arriving in August 2023.
