New “Modus Operandi” in 3D Modeling: NVIDIA’s AI Tool ‘GET3D’

NVIDIA’s new AI (artificial intelligence) model has the potential to reshape the way we create 3D models and use 3D modeling software. Once NVIDIA GET3D becomes available to the public, customers can experiment with different shapes and textures and potentially create more realistic virtual worlds without wasting precious time.

Trained using only 2D images, NVIDIA GET3D generates 3D shapes with high-fidelity textures and complex geometric details – NVIDIA’s blog says.  

“These 3D objects are created in the same format used by popular graphics software applications, allowing users to immediately import their shapes into 3D renderers and game engines for further editing.” 

However, the NVIDIA GET3D AI tool could be a practical solution for developers building 3D characters and objects for projects and virtual worlds, so let’s see what the hype is all about.

What is NVIDIA GET3D? 

GET3D is NVIDIA’s new AI model developed to simplify digital 3D model creation. NVIDIA states the new tool can generate an unlimited number of 3D shapes based on the data used to train GET3D. This is a promising statement, as it opens doors to new possibilities.   

In other words, NVIDIA GET3D can generate an entirely new collection of different buildings or car models after going through a training dataset of building or car images. The same goes for any other object or being– as the tool becomes familiar with a particular concept, it uses the data to deliver unique and accurate shapes.  

NVIDIA’s GET3D paper explains the research and experimentation behind its new tool. “For evaluation on ShapeNet, we use three categories with complex geometry – Car, Chair, and Motorbike, which contain 7497, 6778, and 337 shapes, respectively.” 

“We randomly split each category into training (70%), validation (10 %), and test (20 %), and further remove from the test set shapes that have duplicates in the training set. To render the training data, we randomly sample camera poses from the upper hemisphere of each shape. For the Car and Chair categories, we use 24 random views, while for Motorbike we use 100 views due to less number of shapes.”, NVIDIA explains.

If NVIDIA’s AI model takes off and proves itself worthy, NVIDIA GET3D will become a game-changer for many individuals and industries. 

However, the purpose of NVIDIA GET3D isn’t to generate images only. GET3D has been taught to recognize and create textures as a way to add uniqueness and accuracy to the generated shapes. 

The research team behind GET3D has meticulously approached the development of the AI tool. NVIDIA GET3D paper confirms its “generation process is split into two parts: a geometry branch, which differentiably outputs a surface mesh of arbitrary topology, and a texture branch that produces a texture field that can be queried at the surface points to produce colors.” 

NVIDIA GET3D Release Date 

When we asked about the NVIDIA GET3D release date, NVIDIA’s customer support agent said for Web Mind that “we don’t have information about when the tool will be available.”  

In other words, it may take weeks or even months before the GET3D comes to life. 

Regardless, this is excellent news for the tech world, as the AI tool could be a solution to many challenges in the gaming industry, for example. Additionally, NVIDIA GET3D will undoubtedly attract the attention of other industry experts, potentially resulting in a global shift to similar technologies.
